Conviction

I am…working with conviction

What is a conviction? Is it just a personal opinion? Some define it as those things for which you would be willing to die; all else is a preference.

Conviction results in hope, not despair.

What does conviction mean to you?

Quotes on conviction:

•”With the power of conviction, there is no sacrifice.” – Pat Benatar

•”He who believes is strong, he who doubts is weak. Strong convictions precede great actions.” – Louisa May Alcott

•Never, “for the sake of peace and quiet,” deny your own experience or convictions.”– Dag Hammarskjold

•“Conviction is worthless unless it is converted into conduct.” – Thomas Carlyle

•”Follow your honest convictions and be strong.” – William Makepeace Thackeray

Compassion

I am…compassionate.

With the recent event in Connecticut it feels like a time for compassion. Morgan Freeman even wrote in Facebook to turn off the television in order to stop supporting the networks talk about the killer. Here is what he said: “You can help by forgetting you ever read the man’s name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news.”

I agree with what he is saying about listening to television is no way to support the victims and their families. I had already decided on my own to turn off the television. I feel it is more of a time to pray for the victims and their families.

Quotes on compassion:

•“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” – Dalai Lama

•“Wisdom, compassion, and courage are the three universally recognized moral qualities of men.” – Confucius

•“But my experience is that people who have been through painful, difficult times are filled with compassion.” – Amy Grant

•“For me, forgiveness and compassion are always linked how do we hold people accountable for wrongdoing and yet at the same time remain in touch with their humanity enough to believe in their capacity to be transformed?” – Bell Hooks

Chocolate Covered Anything Day

I am…eating chocolate.

The origin of this day goes back to the mid 1800’s. Swedes discovered a method for covering anything in chocolate that today we know as chocolate fondue.

In a small town in Minnesota the first Chocolate Covered Anything was celebrated, marked by numerous concoctions like chocolate dipped ham strips (eventually this became the modern-day chocolate covered bacon phenomenon), chocolate covered pine cones, and even chocolate covered meatballs.

Golly another opportunity to eat food covered in chocolate. Such a problem. I guess I will volunteer to participate. Yesterday I received some chocolate covered graham crackers as a gift. They would qualify.

Quotes on chocolate:

•A new British survey has revealed that 9 out of 10 people like Chocolate. The tenth lies. – Robert Paul

•Chocolate makes everyone smile-even bankers. – Ben Strohecker, chocolatier

•Eating chocolate can have significant influences on mood, generally leading to an increase in pleasant feelings and a reduction in tension. – Peter Rogers, Ph.D., Institute of Food Research

•The 12-step chocoholics program: NEVER BE MORE THAN 12 STEPS AWAY FROM CHOCOLATE! – Terry Moore

It’s that time of year again

I am…drinking tea

Yes, it is Tea Time with a cup and tea that have my name. I enjoy drinking tea and this time of year my name “Joy” is very popular. So drinking from a cup with my name on it seems appropriate and with the temperature dropping a hot/warm cup of tea can be very comforting.

How you do take a break from the busy holiday season? With a cup of tea?

Quotes on tea drinking:

•“You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – C. S. Lewis

•“I’m an afternoon tea type of girl. I come from a Russian background where we love our teas. So between lunch and dinner after training I come home and I love a nice cup of tea with jam in it, as we drink it there. Black English Breakfast with raspberry jam is my favorite. – Maria Sharapova

•“I put hibiscus flower in every cup of tea I have. It’s sweet, sexy, and cleansing.” – Mario Batali

•“I have to wake up and drink chamomile tea to slow down.” – Janice Dickinson

•“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” – Henry James

Stress relief

I am…dancing in my living room

Time to take a break from working and do something fun. Just a few minutes with the stereo turned up and I unplug from the bookkeeping work that is spread all over my dining room table. With my battery recharged I can return to finish my project. What do you do to take a quick break from work?

Quotes on dancing:

•“Life is like dancing. If we have a big floor, many people will dance. Some will get angry when the rhythm changes. But life is changing all the time.” – Miguel Angel Ruiz

•“When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.” – Wayne Dyer

•“Dancing and running shake up the chemistry of happiness.” – Mason Cooley

•“Find fitness with fun dancing. It is fun and makes you forget about the dreaded exercise.” – Paula Abdul

•“Work like you don’t need the money, love like your heart has never been broken, and dance like no one is watching.” – Aurora Greenway

•“Dance for yourself, if someone understands good, if not then no matter, go right on doing what you love.” – Author unknown

Today is National Poinsettia Day

I am…learning a lot about poinsettia.

The poinsettia is also known as the Mexican flame leaf or Christmas star.

Did you know that today, the United States produces more poinsettias than any other country—over 75 million annually—making it the top-selling potted flowering plant in the United States and the world, and far outpacing chrysanthemums and orchids, its next closest competitors.

The plant was discovered by Dr. Poinsett when he was visiting southern Mexico and introduced to the United States in 1828. The plant was later named after him. Can you believe that National Poinsettia Day has been celebrated for 150 years?

The plant has become emblematic of peace on Earth. The main objective of this day is to ensure that National Poinsettia Day becomes a widely celebrated holiday in our land and around the world.

Poinsettias come in a variety of colors from red, salmon, and apricot to yellow, cream, and white. Red, of course, is the most popular. I love the bright red ones. But the red and white combined color ones are pretty too. I usually have a plant outside my front door every year. Sometimes I have a pumpkin on one side of the door and a poinsettia on the other but not this year. Best of all I enjoy how long they last.

Attention

I am…working with focused attention.

By using different techniques I can improve my concentration. Some of these techniques include being in a quiet place, listening to soft classical music, taking short breaks to relax or having a snack. These and other ideas help me reduce my mental chatter, so that I can keep my attention on my work.

With focused attention I am able to complete projects in a timely fashion.

Quote on attention:

“The best way to forget one self is to look at the world with attention and love.” – Red Auerbach

“The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention.” – Richard Moss

“Give whatever you are doing and whoever you are with the gift of your attention.” – Jim Rohn

“When you write down your ideas you automatically focus your attention on them. Few if any of us can write one thought and thin another at the same time. Thus a pencil and paper make excellent concentration tools.” – Michael Leboeuf

Another weeks begins

I am…enjoying holiday parties

My first was on Monday night. It was a dinner party and secret Santa gift exchange. Saturday was a luncheon with white elephant gift exchange. Sunday I attended a surprise birthday party luncheon. Now I have a break from parties and holiday cheer as there aren’t any parties this week.

I did get in some shopping this weekend as well for two boys I picked in Salvation Army Christmas Angel Program.  I have been doing this for several years. In the past I just purchased toys but this year I got them jackets as well.

This is how my holiday season is starting. Has yours started?

Quotes on holidays:

•“Once again, we come to the Holiday Season, a deeply religious time that each of us observes, in his own way, by going to the mall of his choice. – Dave Barry

•“Nothing says holidays, like a cheese log.” – Ellen DeGeneres

Party Follow-up

I am…surprised.

This year’s white elephant gift exchange was fun as usual. There were 48 ladies participating. I was #16. I stole a gift from #1. It was 3 of those pop up netting thingies for covering food at an outdoor meal. Now I am ready for next year’s BBQ on my back deck. It seemed every gift my friend Mary opened was stolen from her until almost the end. But the real surprise ending was when #48 opened a package to find a “white elephant” tea pot. That’s right a real “white elephant” was the last gift and I posted a picture to prove it. That’s what I call a surprise ending.

Let the weekend begin

I am…going to another holiday party.

It is being held at a local restaurant.  After lunch we will have a white elephant gift exchange.  White elephant parties are known to result in playful rivalries between players trying to get sought after gifts. I think the goal of a white elephant gift exchange is to entertain rather than to gain. I was told there will be around 40 guests so the white elephant could take some time. Last year with this group I came home with a huge jar of berry jam from Oregon. I wonder what I will leave with this year. No matter what it is fun to visit with people you work with, enjoy a nice meal and then watch the excitement of interactions during white elephant gift exchange.

Here is hoping you have a fun weekend too.
