Affirmations

I let go of the need to say ‘Yes’

Letting go of the need to say ‘Yes’ was part of yesterday’s positive thought.

I think about things I should do and/or I think I should want to do. There are the things I guess other people might expect me to do. And there are the things I just don’t want to do but agreed to. In reality sometimes we put this pressure on ourselves. One simple yet powerful word ‘No’ instead of ‘yes’ can relieve this pressure. Plus realizing that the world around us won’t fall apart if we say No. We have choice and maybe we just need to remember that.

Quotes on Yes:

“Half of the troubles of this life can be traced to saying yes too quickly and not saying no soon enough.” ~Josh Billings

“A ‘No’ uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble.” – Mahatma Gahndi

“Learn to say ‘no’ to the good so you can say ‘yes’ to the best.” – John C. Maxwell

“The oldest, shortest words – ‘yes’ and “no’ – are those which require the most thought.” – Pythagoras

“The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes. It is very easy to say yes.” – Tony Bair

I am…reflecting on blogging this year

Are you spending time reflecting on this year? Or making plans for next year? I am considering writing a weekly blog instead of daily. I have writing one each day for 10 months.  I am working on creating another set of affirmation cards and writing a blog less often would give me more time to devote to card production. Making that change will mean I need to rename my blog from Joy’s Daily Musings. Maybe I will just call it Joy’s Musings.

Quotes on reflecting:

“The people we are in relationships with are always a mirror, reflecting our own beliefs, and simultaneously we are mirrors, reflecting their beliefs.” – Shakti Gawain

“I think that when you’re writing fiction what you’re doing is reflecting life as you see it.” – Helen Fielding

“Usually, when the distractions of daily life deplete our energy, the first thing we eliminate is the thing we eliminate is the thing we need the most: quiet, reflective time. Time to dream, time to contemplate what’s working and what’s not, so that we can make changes for the better.” – Sarah Breathnach

“Friends are the mirror reflecting the truth of who we are.” – Author unknown

“A moral being is one who is capable of reflecting on his past actions and their motives-of approving of some and disapproving of others.” – Charles Dickens

I let go of Need to Impress Others

I let go of need to impress others. That’s Today’s Positive Thought. Doesn’t that sound like life just got easier. Relax. Take a deep breath and just be myself.

Quotes on impressing others:

•“Believe in yourself and stop trying to convince others” – James De La Vega

•“Never try to impress a woman, because if you do she’ll expect you to keep up the standard for the rest of your life.” – W.C. Fields

•“I’ve reached a point in life where it’s no longer necessary to try to impress. If they like me the way I am, that’s good. If they don’t, that’s too bad.” – Corazon Aquino

•“The most common trouble with advertising is that it tries too hard to impress people.” – James Randolph Adams

•“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” – Will Smith

I am…taking good care of my body

I am…taking good care of my body. This affirmation was yesterday’s A Positive Thought for the day. Felt like an appropriate focus for the day after Christmas. A holiday that can stress the body due to intake of more food and drink than we normally eat. Plus all the activities that lead up to this day like shopping for the perfect gift.

Time to get back to basics.7 -8 hours sleep, 20-30 minutes exercise each day (my favorite is a nice walk), drink plenty of water, eat more vegetables, and  meditate.

Quotes on body:

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn

“When everyone takes care of himself, care is taken of all. ~ English Proverb

A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools. ~ Spanish Proverb

“The..patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don’t take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop.”- Quentin Regestein

“To keep the body in good health is a duty…otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” – Buddha

How I use leftover turkey

I am…making turkey soup.

The tradition in my family when we finish eating turkey is to start making soup. First cut all the meat off the bones. Then put the carcass in the big stock pot with water add onion, celery, carrot and spices. We always include barley, some cut up turkey and sometimes rice at the end. My kids liked it best when I would use the blender to liquefy the vegetables.

Quotes on turkey:

“Turkey, unlike chicken, has very elegant characteristics. It has more of a cache than chicken. Turkey is a delicacy, so it should be presented in such a way. – Todd English

“That’s the ultimate goal of most turkey recipes: to create a great skin and stuffing to hide the fact that turkey meat, in its cooked state, is dry and flavorless. Does it have to be that way? No. We just have to focus on what the turkey is and what the turkey needs.” – Alton Brown

“We should all get together and make a country in which everybody can eat turkey whenever he pleases.” – Harry S Truman

Santa arrives

I am…opening presents.

Is your house covered in wrapping paper from all the gifts that Santa left? At our house we would go around the room one at a time and open a gift. It would take several rounds for all the gifts to be opened. I have heard in some families everyone opens all their gifts at the same time. I was told that we are very polite to patiently wait our turn to open a gift. Either way we are left with lots of wrapping paper to clean up. Do you wad up paper after opening a gift or fold it for the trash can? I admit it is fun to wad up and then throw into a bag but it takes up more space in the trash that way.

Here is hoping everyone enjoys their Santa gifts.

Quotes on Christmas day:

“One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day.  Don’t clean it up too quickly.” ~Andy Rooney

“May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through!”  ~Author Unknown

“Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.”  ~Janice Maeditere

Another Holiday Party

I am…eating a balanced meal.

As a guest at this party I was responsible to bring a dessert. I brought an apple pie. Hostess though she was going to have more guests bring appetizers than desserts but that is not what actually happened. The inserted photo gives you an idea of some of the delicious desserts we had to pick from. I think my favorite was the homemade fudge. I brought one piece home to enjoy later.

We did have some dinner to eat as well three different soups. They were chicken noodle, minestrone and pumpkin plus a green salad. So, I did eat a balanced meal not just lots of desserts.

Quotes on holiday/parties:

“Celebrate the happiness that friends are always giving, make every day a holiday and celebrate just living!” – Amanda Bradley

“Never be the first to arrive at a party or the last to go home and never, never be both.” – David Brown

“At every party there are two kinds of people – those who want to go home and those who don’t.  The trouble it, they are usually married to each other.” – Ann Landers

Follow-up to Solstice Ceremony

I am…enjoying Stillheart Institute

I stayed overnight after the Solstice Ceremony at Stillheart Institute. It ended after midnight.  I was in room #303 or the Equanimity room. Each room has a name or focus. Equanimity is said to be “evenness of mind”. Buddha described a mind filled with equanimity as “abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility and without ill-will. Sounds good to me.

I am glad I didn’t drive home as it was pouring rain after the ceremony and during the early morning hours as well. Plus Stillheart is one of my favorite places to visit so the opportunity to stay over after ceremony was a welcome choice.

The artwork (photo in this blog) in the bathroom made me think of all the drums we were using at the ceremony. It was round like the drums and beautiful too. It was painted by Juilen Canuso who was the resident artist at Stillheart Institute.

Quotes about Stillheart Institute:

•“Beautifully appointed with depth, wisdom and integrity. A truthful experience.” – Angela Feist

•”The location and design provide total relaxation. It was hard to leave and come back to reality.” – Marika, of Future Legacy

Today’s Word is Fun

I am…having fun

Being it is the holiday season I have been attending parties. Lots of white elephant gift exchanges, good food and drink. Let’s just say fun, fun and more fun. Did I mention we got to make our own sundaes at last party.

Quotes on fun:

•”People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” – Dale Carnegie

•“If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun.” – Katharine Hepburn

•“A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.” – Richard Branson

•“If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it.” – Herodotus

Solstice Celebration

The winter solstice is today. It is the time at which the Sun is appearing at noon at its lowest altitude above the horizon. Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied but most Northern Hemisphere cultures hold recognition of rebirth, involving festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time.

I know of several solstice ceremonies going on today near me. I am attending one at Stillheart Institute that is focusing on rebirth. There will be drumming. So this is my first opportunity to use the drum I made last month.

Quotes on solstice:

“We all walk in the dark and each of us must learn to turn on his or her own light.” – Earl Nightingale

Now, near the Winter Solstice, it is good to light candles. All the nice meanings of bringing light to the world can be beautiful. But perhaps we are concentrating on lighting the world because we don’t know how to light up our own lives.” –  Ralph Levy

As the sun spirals its longest dance, Cleanse us. As nature shows bounty and fertility. Bless us. Let all things live with loving intent. And to fulfill their truest destiny.” A Wiccan Blessing for summer solstice
