Assumptions

I let go of assumptions.

We make assumptions so that our minds can interpret what we are seeing, hearing, touching, tasting or smelling.  We use the assumptions to explain the data our brain is receiving. Often assumptions are based on deeply held beliefs. Unmasking these beliefs and assumptions helps us learn and understand what motivates us.

Assumptions can hinder a relationship when you assume something about another person.  Assuming that you know how somebody else is feeling about you or a situation is something we probably all do. We shouldn’t judge a person unless we have talked with him/her one-on-one. This will allow you the opportunity to understand another person’s situation and life rather than thinking you know them.

Quotes on assumptions:

•“Assumptions are the termites of relationships.” – Henry Winkler

•“You must stick to your conviction, but be ready to abandon your assumptions.” – Denis Waitley

•“We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be. And our attitudes and behaviors grow out of these assumptions.” – Stephen R. Covey

•“The harder you fight to hold on to specific assumptions, the more likely there’s gold in letting go of them” – John Seely Brown

•“Begin challenging your assumptions. Your assumptions are the windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in awhile or the light won’t come in.” – Alan Alda
