New Thought

Today is World Teacher Day

Since 1994 World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5 October. It is an opportunity for UNESCO and Education International to celebrate the profession and to promote international standards for the teaching profession. The theme for this year is: Teachers for gender equality.

For more information go to http://www.5oct.org/2012/index.php/en/

Teachers’ Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by teachers all over the world. Show your support for these dedicated and important people not just on Teachers’ Day, but throughout the whole year.

Let me just say my favorite teacher was Mrs. Sweet in 5th Grade. Maybe there is something in her name.

•“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” – Brad Henry

Competent

I am…competent.

Today I heard another bookkeeper speaking praises of my skills to a potential new client. It was nice to sit back and take in that someone appreciates my work and feels I am competent.

Regret

I let go of regret.

We all have something we’ve regretted doing – or not doing – in our past. From wishing we hadn’t worked so hard to hurting someone’s feelings, experiencing regret is a way for us to learn.

Good news is that regret can be turned into a positive influence for change. When we realize what we want to change from the past, we can use that information to behave more appropriately in the future.

What’s your greatest regret so far, and what will you set out to achieve or change before you die?

Quotes on regret:

•“Regret doesn’t remind us that we did badly. It reminds us that we know we can do better.” – Kathryn Schultz

•“Make the most of your regrets; never smother your sorrow, but tend and cherish it till it comes to have a separate and integral interest. To regret deeply is to live afresh.” – Henry David Thoreau

“If you aren’t in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty, or back to pain and regret.” – Jim Carrey

•“We suffer from one of two things. Either the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Discipline weighs ounces and regret weighs tons.”
-Jim Rohn

•“Fools live to regret their words, wise men to regret their silence.” – Will Henry

One step in being able to succeed

I let go of excuses.

Excuses today, can limit our options tomorrow. Excuses limit what we can accomplish because they give us the reasons not to try or to quit in the middle.

In Wayne Dyer’s book “Excuses Be Gone” he suggests you ask yourself the question:

“What’s the payoff? What do you get out of holding on to your excuses?”

Did that question hit you right between the eyes? Time to let go of excuses and do something.

Let’s make a vow to no longer allow our excuses to limit us, our potential, our happiness, or our health.
Quotes on excuses:

Excuses are your lack of faith in your own power. From Dr Robert Anthony book “Think”.

•“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” – Benjamin Franklin

•“Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” – George Washington Carver

•“I do not believe in excuses. I believe in hard work as the prime solvent of life’s problems.” – James Cash Penney

•“The best job goes to the person who can get it done without passing the buck or coming back with excuses.” – G. M. Trevelyan

•“Leadership, leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses.” – Mitt Romney

Risk Taking

I am…a risk taker, Yes!

Some 27 years ago I started my own bookkeeping practice. My family thought I was a little crazy. I kept at it and still love working in the industry. Though today, I work with more not for profit organizations than small businesses or individuals. And the software has definitely evolved over the years.

I also founded the Peninsula Bookkeepers Association in 1989. There was no such organization on the San Francisco Peninsula. The group is still around. We now have quarterly instead of monthly meetings. Last month we had a gal from Bill.com speak to our group. Yet more evidence that software is changing in the arena of bookkeeping.

Then in 2004 I started a second business. I publish affirmation cards. It took a year to finish the first set. They are the “I am” affirmation cards. Then two years after that I created my second set. They are the “Letting Go” cards. Then 4 years go by and I have android apps for each set of cards. I am currently creating several more sets of cards. They include “Grieving” cards, “Forgiveness” cards, “I choose” cards and cards to support our chakras. I may not be as big as Hay House but I love the feedback from end users on how the cards support their lives.

Quotes on risk:

•“You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen.” – Paulo Coelho

Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth.” – Katherine Mansfield

“Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one has better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk – and to act.” – Andre Malraux

“He who risks and fails can be forgiven. He who never risks and never fails is a failure in his whole being.” – Paul Tillich

Words are Powerful

I am…careful with the words I use.

Our words have the power to shape our world. Use them to create the good we desire.

If we direct positive words toward a person or situation they have a positive effect. This would mean that negative words directed at a person would have a negative effect. So my thought here is to be careful with our words before expressing them either aloud or on paper. Words put on paper are just as powerful as those you express out loud.

As you go about your day, keep in mind the power of your words. You can make the world a better place by the words you use. You have the power to support or encourage others by your behavior.

Quotes on words:

•“Da Da”: Powerful enough to make a grown man cry when spoken for the first time by his son. – Source unknown

•“Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care, for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or evil.” Siddhartha Gotoma or Buddha (563-483 B.C.)

• “Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are endless.” – Mother Theresa

•“Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, the recipient may cherish them for a lifetime.” – Dale Carnegie

•“Words have longer life than deeds.” – Pindar

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” – Lao Tzu

Judgment

I let go of judgment.

Do you find judging to be a pattern in your life? It is a major addiction in our lives. When you find yourself judging, you could opt to let it go, stop it right then. You will be taking the energy away from it. Something to think about.

Quotes on judgment:

•“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” – Mother Teresa

•“Judgements prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.” – Wayne Dyer

•“Judge nothing, you will be happy. Forgive everything, you will be happier. Love everything, you will be happiest.” Sri Chinmoy

•“A major advantage of age is learning to accept people without passing judgment.” – Liz Carpenter

•“We judge others by their behavior. We judge ourselves by our intentions.” – Ian Percy

•“We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Zoo Parenting

I was…a zoo parent.

San Francisco has an Adopt-an-Animal Program. This program is used to support the San Francisco Zoological Society and further their mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature and advance conservation action.

I adopted a giraffe at basic level. I got a certificate of adoption and a fun fact sheet. I have given this as a gift to family members. In the past my adoption entitled me to attend annual zoo parent day. On this day we get to go on a behind the scene tour.  One time I got to feed a giraffe. Another time I fed a potato to a rhino. And while there it is fun to ride on the little puffer miniature steam train and Dentzel historical carousel.

Quotes on zoo:

•“I got access to a private tour of the zoo. I got to go in a cage with a koala, which I highly recommend.” – Todd Barry

•“I like to do chill things on dates. I think it would be fun to go to the zoo. I know it’s really weird and random, but I love animals. It’d be like a day of doing silly things, while enjoying nature.” – Ashlee Simpson

•“I love acting, but it’s much more fun taking the kids to the zoo.” – Nicole Kidman

•“People go to the zoo and they like the lion because it’s scary. And the bear because it’s intense, but the monkey makes people laugh.” – Lorne Michaels

•“I’ve actually gone to the zoo and had monkeys shout to me from their cages, “I’m in here when you’re walking around like that?”” – Robin Williams

How I recharge my batteries

I am…camping

We did lots of this when I was growing up. My favorite memory is when I got to sleep on my own inside our one wheel trailer. My dad made a tent over it. Then I grew too big and didn’t fit in it anymore. Then my brother got to sleep in the trailer. We went to parks in northern California. When I got married we spent almost every summer camping and hiking in Yosemite. It is great to be outdoors in the fresh air. I even skied out to Glacier Point one winter and camped overnight. There was full moon over Half Dome that night. It was spectacular sight.

Then there is the singing around the campfire and roasting marshmallows to make smores. Oh and let’s not forget the smelly stuff I would lather on to stop mosquitoes from biting. I have lots of fond memories from my camping trips.

•“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity…”  – John Muir

Light hearted Quotes on camping:

•“Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong.” – George Carlin

•”Camping is nature’s way of promoting the motel business.” – Dave Barry

Day Off

I am…taking the day off.

I didn’t schedule any client appointments for today. My son is arriving at the airport just before noon. I will be picking him up and then we will head over to Half Moon Bay for lunch. He was here last month. It was a quick visit to be in his brother’s wedding. We didn’t get much time to visit. I am looking forward to his arrival.

Before he arrives I am going to have a coaching session with Rev. Clarke Carraway from the Rodan Foundation. I am looking for focus and direction.

It is nice to occasionally take a day off and spend it as I see fit. Making this day an opportunity to recharge my batteries.

Quote on day off:

“We should pass a flex time law that allows employees to take their overtime pay in money or in time off, depending on what’s better for their family.” – President Bill Clinton

•“By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacationless class.” – Anne Morrow Lindbergh

• “Sometimes it’s important to work for the pot of gold. But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow.” – Douglas Pagels
