New Thought

I am Upbeat

And I am not just saying that because today is Friday or the end of the week. Life is an attitude. How we look at our day can be upbeat. Here are a couple of mental health tips to help one stay upbeat.

Keep Moving. Get exercise every day. Could be a trip to the gym, taking a walk, doing some sit ups in your bedroom at home. All this keeps the feel-good brain chemistry active.

Practice Gratitude. You can start each day with thinking about something you are grateful for. You could even keep a “gratitude notebook”. Take a few moments each day to write down one or two things you are grateful for. Focus on what you have vs. what you are missing.

Quotes on upbeat:

•“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” – Abraham Lincoln

•“People will always criticize. Stay upbeat and love yourself! There’s nothing wrong with being different.” – Author unknown

I let go of the need for approval

If we have a need for approval then we have low self-esteem. Low self-esteem may come from experiences in childhood like lack of positive feedback as a child and sense of neglect as a child.

Let’s look for a couple of steps to reduce the need for approval. 1) Develop a list of the positive attributes you possess. 2) Create positive affirmations to use on a regular basis. Examples would be I am…enough. I am…talented. I am…creative.

Quotes on need for approval:

•“People who want the most approval get the least and people who need approval the least get the most.” – Wayne Dyer
•“I don’t have anything to prove anymore. I don’t have a record deal, no one has any expectations, I’m in a position of freedom. I don’t need anyone’s approval.” – Juliana Hatfield.

•“I think it is vital to fight to do something you want to do despite not gaining your community’s or your friends’ approval. – Archie Panjabi

•“The pursuit of approval usually ends in disaster.” – Chris Morris

•“Even though I don’t feel I need approval, it’s still important to me to give a good performance. I’m hard on myself.” – Michelle Pfeiffer

Why did I choose “Daily Musings” for my blog title?

I am wondering that now as I have to come up with something to write about each day. My original reasoning was to build up my presence on the google search. There is a gal who makes jewelry out of hemp and her name comes up 5th when searching. I figured “daily” comes alphabetically before” jewelry “ so I might be able to have my name come up more than she does.

Using the word “daily” to me means I need to have a blog posted each and every day. Thus finding Positive Thoughts to blog about is what I do. I have tied them to my “I am” and “Letting Go” cards. Or I find fun things happening to post about like Chocolate Cupcake Day or Talk Like a Pirate Day. I like to add quotes that relate to my topic. Some days that is easy and other days not so much. The searching for quotes has provided some interesting reading and thought provoking insights. So all and all it has been a benefit to me.

Are you blogging? If so how often?

Quotes on daily:

•“It is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives.” – Dalai Lama

•“The sky is the daily bread of the eyes.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

•“Ask yourself: Have you been kind today? Make kindness your daily modus operandi and change your world.” – Anne Lennox

•“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.” – William Morris

I let go of hoarding

This is Today’s Positive Thought. The quotes I found below brought a whole new light to the idea of hoarding. Holding onto information and not just stuff is also a form of hoarding.

I am more familiar with the following definition in relationship to things. A hoarder cannot make rational decisions about what is useful and what is not. A hoarder is usually unaware of anything being wrong.  Someone who clutters feels concern about things accumulating.

Quotes on hoarding:

•“We are not cisterns made for hoarding, we are channels made for sharing.” – Billy Graham

•“Knowledge is power. Information is power. The secreting or hoarding of knowledge or information may be an act of tyranny camouflaged as humility.” – Robin Morgan

•“There are two fools in the world. One is the millionaire who thinks that by hoarding money he can somehow accumulate real power, and the other is the penniless reformer who thinks that if only he can take the money from one class and give it to another, all the world’s ills will be cured.” – Henry Ford

•“In today’s environment, hoarding knowledge ultimately erodes your power. If you know something very important, the way to get power is by actually sharing it.” – Joseph Badaracco

Are you looking for inspiration?

I am…reading.

Actually I just finished reading “Affirmations”-(How to Expand Your Personal Power & Take Back Control of Your Life) by Stuart Wilde. I have read lots of books about affirmations in support of my creating two sets of affirmation cards. I always learn something new from what others think about using affirmations. Reading is a source of greater depth in my learning.

My title for today’s daily musings was dedicated to looking for inspiration. I consider this book one that could inspire the reader to all the possibilities in their life. This is a self help book where he gives you steps to follow and even includes affirmations to use.

Quotes on reading:

•“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” – Maya Angelou

•“There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.” – Ray Bradbury

•“A truly good book teaches me better than to read it. I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint. What I began by reading, I must finish by acting.” – Henry David Thoreau

•“If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” – Oscar Wilde

Pet Sitting

I am…pet sitting.

I have been for several months. The cat I am taking care of is staying at my house. This makes it easier than traveling to take care of a pet. Her name is Marzie. She is a talker. I hear her first thing in the morning when I walk into my kitchen. So I generally eat my oatmeal while sitting next to her and brushing her fur. She talks non stop until I have been brushing her for several minutes. I am her current best friend. Oh, and she has soft fur maybe from all my brushing.

Quotes about pets:

•”A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.” – Josh Billings

•”Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.” – George Eliot

•”Time spent with cats is never wasted.” – Sigmund Freud

•”There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.” – Albert Schweitzer

•”I have felt cats rubbing their faces against mine and touching my cheek with claws carefully sheathed. These things, to me, are expressions of love.” – James Herriot

Arrogance

I let go of arrogance.

Arrogance that would be an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner. Doesn’t sound like anyone I would want to work with! Yesterday I wrote about working together in a harmonious manner and today working with someone who is full of themselves/arrogant would not be fun. I am imagining that the project we set out to accomplish wouldn’t come together as quickly or easily.

Quotes on arrogance:

•”Arrogance diminishes wisdom.” – Arabian Proverb

•”The truest characters of ignorance are vanity, and pride and arrogance.” – Samuel Butler

•”In the process of trial and error, Our failed attempts are meant to destroy arrogance and provoke humility.” – Master Jim Kwon

•”An extraordinary amount of arrogance is present in any claim of having been the first in inventing something.” – Benoit Mandelbrot

Harmonious

I am…harmonious.

Being part of a team and working together for a common goal where we agree in action and feeling can make us a harmonious group. Isn’t it pleasant to work with others when we are in harmony?

Quotes on harmonious:

“A man is not rightly conditioned until he is a happy, healthy, and prosperous being; and happiness, health, and prosperity are the result of a harmonious adjustment of the inner with the outer of the man with his surroundings.” – James Allen

“Imagine what a harmonious world it could be if every single person, both young and old shared a little of what he is good at doing.” – Quincy Jones

“Music is the harmonious voice of creation; an echo of the invisible world.” – Giuseppe Mazzini

“Men must stop being jealous of their power and generously allow freedom and responsibility to others. The reward is harmonious families and society.” – Delphine de Girardin

“If you see good in people, you radiate a harmonious loving energy which uplifts those who are around you. If you can maintain this habit, this energy will turn into a steady flow of love.” – Annamalai Swami

In our interactions with others,
gentleness,
kindness,
respect
are the source of harmony – Buddha

“He who lives in harmony with himself lives in harmony with the universe.” – Marcus Aurelius

Quarreling

I let go of quarreling.

To me it feels like a lot of wasted energy when continuing to quarrel. It is exhausting work quarreling.

Quotes on quarreling:

•”If we open a quarrel between past and present, we shall find that we have lost the future.” – Winston Churchill

•”A quarrel is quickly settled when deserted by one party; there is no battle unless there be two.” – Lucius Annaeus Seneca

•“It takes two to quarrel, but only one to end it.” – Matthew Prior

•“When two men quarrel, the one who yields first displays the nobler nature.” –  Talmud

•“Wise men do not quarrel with each other.”  – Danish Proverb

•You too shall pass away.
Knowing this, how can you quarrel?
Buddha

•“If people were universally cheerful, probably there wouldn’t be half the quarreling or a tenth part of the wickedness.” – Author unknown

•”Time heals griefs and quarrels, for we change and are no longer the same persons.” ~ Pascal

Unworthy

I let go of feeling unworthy.

How to release feeling unworthy: Here are a couple of steps. Don’t stay locked into the past. Since you feel unworthy based on how people have reacted towards you. Your mind will keep repeating pictures of that feeling from the past. When these thoughts appear, don’t give them energy. Let them say float on by and instead focus on being present in the now. Another step, try a new approach to your next encounter where you feel unworthy. Stretch beyond your comfort zone. If even just a little. Keep at it as you’re headed toward feeling better/happy.

Quotes on unworthy:

I really liked Yale, although it was extremely intimidating. When I visited the campus, I was hiding behind trees, I felt so unworthy. – Claire Danes

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

“Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.” – ~Rachel Naomi Remen

“I have taken this step because I want the discipline, the fire and the authority of the Church. I am hopelessly unworthy of it, but I hope to become worthy.”  – Edith Sitwell
