New Thought

I am…in the flow

The title to this blog was not true a couple of days ago. I have guests at my house. Two college students from Japan. I am hosting them while they attend ESL classes for two weeks.  I have been hosting students for several years though I usually haveIn the flow one student at a time.  All this is background on my current experience.

Here is my story about being in the flow or not.

It turns out these two students use one “double” roll of toilet paper a day. So after 3 days the toilet in my guest bathroom backed up. This is like stopping my flow. I had to have the line snaked in order to correct the problem. Then I learned that the sewer line from guest bathroom goes up and down before connecting with the main sewer line so overuse of toilet paper is hard on the system. In addition to snaking the line I had the sewer pipe from toilet to main sewer line replaced to be only at a down angle. After all of this work I am now back in the flow.

Conversation Starter

animal medicine cards

I had a tea party last month and I include a time for sharing after we eat treats and drink tea. Last year the party was in January so we shared the word that expressed our focus/intention for the year.  This year I used a set of animal medicine cards to start a conversation.  Everyone held the cards in their hands, shuffled them and then picked one. Each card has a message written under the animal. The photo I included as part of this blog is of a hummingbird.  Part of hummingbird  message is “Be Joyful”. After reading their message my guests would tell us how the message relates to their life at this moment. We all found the messages to be uplifting.

The author of the Medicine Cards says the cards are used as an advanced tool for achieving personal growth and balanced living. Is there a tool you use for personal growth?

How I started your day on an up note

I am…starting my day on an up note.

I was looking out my front door as I heard construction workers arriving next door. What I did see was a hummingbird flying around the yellow flowering Hibiscus by my front steps. It kept flying around the bush and then it landed. I wondered why it would land then it started feeding two babies. When she flew away I tried to take a picture of them but didn’t to get to close. Plus finding their tiny nest was hard as it blends in with the branch. Let’s just say seeing them was an uplifting way to start my day.

Did you know that Hummingbird’s mission is to spread joy? Since hummingbird came to me this morning maybe my message is to give thanks for the beauty in the world and that I am a part of it.

I let go of Need to Impress Others

I let go of need to impress others. That’s Today’s Positive Thought. Doesn’t that sound like life just got easier. Relax. Take a deep breath and just be myself.

Quotes on impressing others:

•“Believe in yourself and stop trying to convince others” – James De La Vega

•“Never try to impress a woman, because if you do she’ll expect you to keep up the standard for the rest of your life.” – W.C. Fields

•“I’ve reached a point in life where it’s no longer necessary to try to impress. If they like me the way I am, that’s good. If they don’t, that’s too bad.” – Corazon Aquino

•“The most common trouble with advertising is that it tries too hard to impress people.” – James Randolph Adams

•“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.” – Will Smith

Thanksgiving Thoughts

Today is Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. It is a day when I usually sleep in, take a walk, watch the Macy’s Holiday Day parade, visit family and friends, eat lots of food, watch some football and some years go to the movies. This year I won’t be doing any cooking.

During the dinner meal is when we get to share what we are grateful for. I am grateful for the wonderful meal that is being prepared for me. The hostess posted in Facebook a video of her making the Italian Rice and Sausage Stuffing we will be enjoying. Since my dinner is being taken care of by someone else I went to Safeway and participated in their Hunger Bag program by making a purchase to support local food banks.

Today Thanksgiving would be a great day to start a gratitude journal. On a daily basis, tell someone how grateful you are for something. Tell fellow employees, friends, family, and even perfect strangers! Let’s help make this a world of grateful, thankful giving and receiving people.

How will you be celebrating Thanksgiving this year? Whether you practice a traditional Thanksgiving celebration or are making new traditions and memories, I wish you a very happy and healthy holiday!

Quotes on Thanksgiving:

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.” – E.P. Powell

Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day.” – Robert Caspar Lintner

“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.” – W.T. Purkiser

Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow.” – Edward Sandford Martin

What are you doing to reduce stress?

I am…meditating.

The primary benefit of meditation is stress relief. When stress is reduced in the nervous system during meditation, benefits like better sleep and clearer thinking also naturally develop.

It is a nice way to start and or end the day. Slow down my thoughts, silence the monkey mind. I find walks in nature relaxing and meditative as well. Are you meditating?

Quotes on meditation:

“Sleep is the best meditation.” – Dalai Lama

“I mean the whole thing about meditation and yoga is about connecting to the higher part of yourself, and then seeing that every living thing is connected in some way.” – Gillian Anderson

“At the end of the day, I can end up just totally wacky, because I’ve made mountains out of molehills. With meditation, I can keep them as molehills.” – Ringo Starr

“Practice meditation regularly. Meditation leads to eternal bliss. Therefore meditate, meditate.”- Swami Sivananda

“I have realized at last the true nature of prayer and meditation. They are simply your own play as longing and as aspiration.” – Ramprasad

How I dealt with Election results stress

I decided to I let go and Let God.

Waiting for election results can be stressful. So instead of watching all the reporting on the television I turned my television to classical masterpieces. I decided to let go and let God instead of worrying about election results. And listening to classical music is very relaxing for me. I did my part and voted and the rest is out of my control. I decided to just wait until morning for the outcome.

Quotes on Letting Go:

•“When you accept the fact you have no control and choose not to take any action, you are letting go.” – Darren L Johnson

•“Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go.” – Hermann Hesse

•“All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” – Havelock Ellis

•“The beautiful journey of today can only begin when we learn to let go of yesterday.” ― Steve Maraboli

“Holding on is believing that there’s only a past: letting go is knowing that there’s a future.” – Daphne Rose Kingma

•“We must learn to let go as easily as we grasp or we will find our hands full and our minds empty.” – Leo Buscaglia

I let go of assumptions.

We make assumptions so that our minds can interpret what we are seeing, hearing, touching, tasting or smelling.  We use the assumptions to explain the data our brain is receiving. Often assumptions are based on deeply held beliefs. Unmasking these beliefs and assumptions helps us learn and understand what motivates us.

Assumptions can hinder a relationship when you assume something about another person.  Assuming that you know how somebody else is feeling about you or a situation is something we probably all do. We shouldn’t judge a person unless we have talked with him/her one-on-one. This will allow you the opportunity to understand another person’s situation and life rather than thinking you know them.

Quotes on assumptions:

•“Assumptions are the termites of relationships.” – Henry Winkler

•“You must stick to your conviction, but be ready to abandon your assumptions.” – Denis Waitley

•“We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be. And our attitudes and behaviors grow out of these assumptions.” – Stephen R. Covey

•“The harder you fight to hold on to specific assumptions, the more likely there’s gold in letting go of them” – John Seely Brown

•“Begin challenging your assumptions. Your assumptions are the windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in awhile or the light won’t come in.” – Alan Alda
