Baking

I am…baking

Today we are having a Healing and the Arts Holiday Festival after church and I am baking my grandmother’s Spanish coffee cake recipe. It has been a family favorite. When my sons were growing up they didn’t care much for dessert but whenever I made Spanish coffee cake they wanted some. And not a little piece. Do you have a family favorite recipe?

Coming up on the holidays reminds me of my childhood when we would bake cookies. It was fun to use cookie cutter and then decorate the cookies with different color sugar and sprinkles before baking and the work in making candy cane cookies. This involved twisting red and white dough shaping into a candy cane and then sprinkling with peppermint before baking.

Quotes on baking:

•“The Second Law of Pies: they must be baked, not fried (or boiled, or steamed).” – Janet Clarkson

•“Baking is how you start kids at cooking in the kitchen. It’s fun whether it’s baking bread or cookies. With baking, you have to be exact when it comes to ingredients.” – Sandra Lee

•[But when, at age 20, she broached the idea of baking cookies for a living, her parents and husband balked.] They said it was a stupid idea, it will never work, it will absolutely fail,…They said you have no money, no job experience and no formal education. – Debbie Fields

•“Baking is like washing–the results are equally temporary.” – Patricia Briggs
